Sleeps with butterflies

07 Aug - Timeline: A History of Violence against Sikhs in the Wake of 9/11

I wish 9/11 never happened. Not just for the victims (rest their souls) and their loved ones, but for the hate and racism that it’s stirred inside people since then.

I’ve never experienced racism. But should it happen, I don’t think it would even compare to what these people have to go through. When they go out to worship. When they walk down the street. When they order food at a nearby restaurant.

Who is living in fear now?

I have encountered only a few Sikhs, but that was more than enough for me to have a good impression of them.

Some of the taxi drivers in Melbourne are Sikhs and they are some of the kindest taxi drivers I’ve encountered here.

When I went to see the Taj Mahal with my mom, the daughter of a Sikh man wanted to have her picture taken with us because she said we looked “nice”. Her baby brother, who looked like he was about 2-3 years old, was already wearing a turban. The victims of the Wisconsin shooting left families like these behind, with racism and religious hatred as the source.
